Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a type of psychotherapy that helps you accept the difficulties that come with life. ACT has been around for a long time, but seems to be gaining media attention lately. Categorically speaking, ACT is a form of mindfulness based therapy, theorizing that greater well-being can be attained by overcoming negative thoughts and feelings. Primary Topic:  182248

Down Economy May Mean More People Drown Their Sorrows

New research contradicts earlier studies that found an economic downturn means less money for potentially unhealthy behaviors such as excessive drinking; instead, it suggests people drown their financial sorrows in a down economy. Health economist Dr. Michael T. French from the University of Miami and his collaborators found that heavy drinking and alcohol abuse/dependence significantly [...]

Is it too late for me to make friends?

I'm a junior in college and I have no social circle. I don't do much outside class because I have no one to socialize with. I'm a nice guy but I don't drink and I'm not in a frat so that has made meeting people hard. I'm not depressed, but I do feel that my lack of social life is unhealthy. I'm 20 and I kind of feel that the social circles around here are already formed. I'm a member of one club but everyone there basically already knows eachother and aren't interested in making friends. What can I do?

Daily Thoughts 10/11/2011 (Book Calendar)

... This is an advanced reading copy given to me by Library Journal. The story is about a man in psychotherapy who has a history of being a bully. This drives one of his friends to committ suicide and his son to try and committ suicide. There is a callousness to the book which is quite surprising. Things have been rather steady today. I updated the Facebook page and the Twitter account.

October is Domestic Violence Month

Domestic violence remains a huge and largely hidden problem. The purple ribbons you may have seen recently on car bumpers and people?s lapels are to remind us that someone is physically, sexually, psychologically or verbally abused by an intimate partner every 15 seconds. It crosses all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic lines, and it happens in [...]

Turning web traffic into citations

Our June editorial discusses the relationship between web traffic and citations. Specifically, can one predict how well any particular paper is cited years after publication, based solely on the number of downloads it receives immediately following its appearance online? Our preliminary analysis suggests that this relationship not only exists, but is surprisingly strong.

I?ll leave you to read the editorial for more of the background as to why we examined this relationship, but I will repeat a few keys things here. The main purpose of this post is to provide more of the details behind the data and analysis, and to initiate a good discussion.

my boyfriend is a sweetheart but I feel like I can't ever earn his trust

Hi, I'm completely new to this forum and this is a little awkward for me, but I don't really know what else I can try at the moment. I'm just doing this during what little spare time I have.

I want to start off by saying that although I am bisexual, I AM a completely monogamous person by nature. I was raised that way, and even if I weren't, I think I'd still have the capacity to see how cheating is such a terrible thing to do to anybody, no matter what. I also want to make it clear that my boyfriend and I DO have a good relationship, and he IS a good person. As a matter of fact, I can
