Awakening dormant genes with cancer drugs

Here?s one that first appeared online at the end of last year by Benjamin Philpot, Bryan Roth and Mark Zylka about a finding that could lead to a therapy for Angelman Syndrome. Angelman syndrome is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder affecting 1 in 15,000 live births and is characterized by developmental delay, lack of speech, seizures, and motor difficulties. There are no therapies available for core symptoms and individuals generally require care throughout life. Autism is often diagnosed in Angelman Syndrome individuals, and the same genomic region has been fingered as a culprit in both disorders. Angelman Syndrome is most commonly caused by deletion of a region on the maternal copy of chromosome 15 containing the gene UBE3A, conversely, some forms of autism may also be caused by duplication of this region.  Read more

The Fine Architecture of Learning and Joint Publication

You warily walk into a dark compartment, wondering if there is food inside. Suddenly there is a loud tone and you feel an uncomfortable surge of electricity through your feet. This goes without saying, but it won?t take long before you will learn to be afraid of that tone. However, over time, you hear the tone without the shock, and slowly (foolishly??) accept that the previous connection may no longer hold.  Read more

Light dissection of reward

Out online in Nature today: a paper from Naoshige Uchida and colleagues about cell-type specific reward and punishment signals in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) of mice. The VTA is a midbrain region heavily implicated in reward and addiction, and its outputs are thought to provide reward-related signals to other brain areas. One subpopulation of cells with the VTA, the dopaminergic neurons, have been the topic of intense study for their potential computational role in reward learning. Over a decade ago Wolfram Schultz and colleagues found that in monkeys, dopaminergic neurons fired for unexpected rewards, but were also suppressed if expected rewards were not received.  Read more

Living the Twelve Traditions in Today?s World: Principles Before Personalities

One of the critical components of the highly successful Alcoholics Anonymous is its stated anonymity. Thus, it makes sense when authors Mel B. and Michael Fitzpatrick denounce the relatively recent trend of celebrities making their alcohol and drug recoveries so public. It?s not that the authors don?t want these people to get help; it?s that [...]

My boyfriend and I both cheated on each other and were still together

My boyfriend and I have been together 3.5 years now. In the beginning everything was great. we were always together, we talked about everything, he was my best friend. Unfortunately later down the road when things got really bad between us i cheated on him with my mechanic. He had suspicions so I told him when he asked. Although he didn't react the way i thought he would (pissed off), i was very sorry i did that to him, he said he forgave me and we could move past it. Come to find out, the real reason he didn't get that upset when i told him was b/c he cheated to me to. He said he told me b/c
